The Post Wall Run!

Activity: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/131943384

Well, not quite the glorius return to easy running that I was hoping for! Still pretty tired and worn down from the last week or so, and apparently the multitude of brownies i'd been snacking on all day did nothing for my energy levels, but they were very nice brownies!

Managed to do the endurance run (3miles at faster than marathon pace, 1mile jog, 3miles again at faster than marathon pace), but my stride felt off, breathing was out of sync and legs felt unusually heavy. The fatigue eased off towards the end of the run as my muscles warmed up, and the discomfort could be partly due to the drop in temperature meaning my muscles aren't warming up as quickly.

What with christmas round the corner, may look at getting running trousers to wear but will likely just stick to the calf grips that Emi is planning on getting me and see how they work out.

All in all, feels good to go back to running, but tonight unfortunately served as a further example that I am simply not either a) eating enough, or b) eating the right things. ( or of course c) eating enough of the right things!)

Will have to make a concerted effort over the weekend to stock up on the healthier options, which im thinking will be fish, white meats, whole grains, beans and vegetables, and possibly a cook book to go along with it!

Hit a wall!

Unfortunately I finally hit a breaking point in my training and had the hardest run so far, which was ironically supposed to be a very gentle and slow run. The 5mile training run yesterday sapped me of the little reserves that I had left and was a bit of a brutal run.

Still, managed to keep going, which is evidence that my legs can keep going even when i'm tired, which is a good thing to know.

Its been quite a long week at work so far (a worrying thought considering that it's only tuesday!) so have switched my training round, and instead of having a strength running session tonight and a day off tomorrow, it will be vice versa. The plus point about this is that I managed to get studying done whilst Emi was at work so mentally feel fit to go back to running tomorrow.

16mile long run incorporating boscombe 10k

Wow! what a run! Possibly one of the more stupid things that I have ever thought of doing, incorporating a 10k race into a long run, but had a really enjoyable run!

The run to the event was reasonably uneventful and got to the race start feeling good and full of energy. The race itself was pretty tough going towards the end. I had finished my sports drink just before the start of the race and was experimenting with peri-race nutrition and giving fruit pastilles a try for a sugar source. Unfortunately, the water station was 7km into the race, so when i was trying to eat the sweets, i found that i couldnt really swallow them as was so thirsty. Also, I found that trying to chew the sweets hindered my breathing, so all in all, think I will have to go back to the drawing board.

I usually use lucozade tablets, but am going to try using powder next time to pre-mix and have in a drink. I think the problem with this will be carrying enough drinks to last a long run, or, being able to quickly put the powder into an empty bottle to refuel at drinks stations. The pace of shorter runs doesn't relaly allow for stopping, so this is probably going to be a tactic for marathon/20mile races.

The run home was pretty brutal. Managed to keep a fairly even 9-9:30min/mile pace which was comfortable, although I think that I waited around for too long after the race finished and my legs began to seize up making it difficult to start running again.

That being said, managed to keep going which is a good sign that I will be able to withstand the mental pressures of multiple distances races next year, even if physically I feel like im pretty drained.

Also, I need to remember that im not likely to try and do a 42 minute 10k in the middle of a marathon!!

On another note, thanks to a generous donation by an old uni friend, i've now hit 1% of my total saving goal, and the page hasn't even been up for a week yet!!

Hopefully thats a good indication of things to come as the challenge progresses through the year!

Parkrun

Epic start to the weekend! Had an awesome run at parkrun this morning!

The crowd there is getting bigger every week and the atmosphere just gets better and better!

8 miles was on the menu this morning so ran the 2 and a bit miles to parkrun, then the 3.25miles round the course (unfortunately getting a bit carried away with the pace on the last 1km or so!) and then took a nice relaxing jaunt home.

Felt my knee twinge a bit so will have to keep an eye on it.

Bit of an update!

Well, i've been a bit lax on the updates so here are the runs from this week:

21/11/12: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/130888045
22/11/12: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/130888039
24/11/12: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/130888040

This weekend is the boscombe 10k on sunday when ive planned to do a 16 mile run (as per the hansons schedule), so may end up running to the race, running the race, and then running home, wish me luck!!

Am making good progress on the training front, but what with the holidays coming up its dawning on me how very close the start of all this is getting and I just hope i'm doing enough!

Had some really positive messages from peple which has helped alot and affirms that its all for a good cause and worth every drop of blood, sweat and tears!

Well, day of rest of out of the way although didn't feel very resting! Back to training tonight and will try to upload the training runs from the beginning of the week.

Started a group on facebook, so hopefully a few more donations will come through and Ray has kidnly put an add in the monthly WRC newsletter, so hopefully word will spread!

Wimbourne 10m

With the training marathon now do, its only about 8 weeks until the big event kicks off and so training is in full swing.

Im following the Hansons marathon plan (weeks 10-18) in the hope itll help me get ready for 2012, and today was a nice 10mile run, which coincided with the Wimbourne 10mile road race which is the second to last race in the WRC road race championship.

Managed to finish in 1 hour 11minutes which was suitably comfortable, mostly due to my impromptu running partner, Judy, who pushed me through most of the race!

Thoroughly enjoyed getting out in the fresh air, and its good to finally be getting towards the start of the 2012 challenge!

The map of the event and all the info recordining from my garmin device can be found here:

Welcome

Welcome to my blog!

During 2012 I will be raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by completing 12 marathons, totalling 314.4 miles. Feel free to have a look through the posts which will cover my training and races, and also links to any resources I come across that may be of interest.

If you happen to be competing in any of the races with me, feel free to drop me a line!
