04/04/2013: Swimming - monthly time trial

Every month Cardiff Tri does a 1500m time trial in the Cardiff International Pool on our thursday session which is a good opportunity to measure your progress as the year goes on outside of a race environment.

The last three trials have been pretty good for me, having gone from not finishing in the first trial in january to 38 minutes exactly in March.

I was hoping for another reduction in my time, although I realised that since I stopped swimming on Tuesday, any reduction would be minimal at best, after all, I have lost 4 hours in the pool every month.

I managed a very reasonable 37:24, an improvement of 36 seconds, which I am really happy with. I lose a fair amount of time on the turns as haven't learnt to tumble turn as yet, but aside from that the major realisation was that the distance no longer frightens me and at the end of the session I still feel as though I have something left in the bank.

Obviously this means that I should be able to go a bit faster, although I am still finding my way in the pool and with it, my limits. Still, I am happy that I have managed to find a pace that I can maintain over the distance and so I am a little bit less apprehensive about the olympic triathlon in July.
