I was hoping to get two workouts in today having missed the bike session yesterday and had planned to do a quick 5km before work followed by the turbo session with Cardiff Tri in the evening as usual.
Alas the best laid plans often go wrong! I had to attend a training seminar today which meant that whilst I still had to get up early, it was to get into work early rather than being able to utilise the extra time for a run!
I got home this evening in a pretty foul mood which has unfortunately been hanging around for a few days. My first thought is that it is probably diet related which has been less than clean since about friday and filled with beer, cake, cookies and rubbish really. I will try to get back on top of it as of now and will have a larger than usual meal tomorrow evening to hopefully set me back on track.
I think that the bike rides into and home from work are going well. The ride home is predominantly up hill so is slower than the ride in but is good practice for muscular endurance work, especially as the mountain bike is so much heavier and less efficient than my road bike.
So, the turbo session didn't quite happen this evening. Partly due to the residual storm clouds and my own lack of motivation but also partly because my legs are very heavy at the moment. I think it'll take about two weeks before my legs start to get used to the extra 10 miles 4 days a week and even then itll be another month or so before I am comfortable with the distance.
I did manage to get out for a run though. Tonight's session was scheduled to be a tempo session with a plan to run 3 miles at my short tempo pace. I haven't sorted out the tempo times as yet as Joe still has my magic book with all the conversion tables, but i figured around the 4:00-4:10 per km mark would be about right.
Over the 5km I average 4:09 per km which I am satisfied with. It was a pleasant result considering the heavy legs and the "can't be arsed attitude" that seems to have taken up residence for the time being. I am pretty happy with simply being able to drag myself out when the motiviation isn't there which, whilst not a physical skill, is definitely an attribute i'd like to keep hold of.
The splits, set to record every 1km, fluctuated between 4:03 (section 5/5) and 4:15 (section 4/5) which is too much of a variance and I will try to work on maintaining a constant speed over the next 11 weeks.
After all that, and being fed and watered, it's definitely time for a decent night sleep and hopefully this irksome mood will have lifted by tomorrow.
